Historically, the concept of otherworldly beings such as UFOs and extraterrestrials has been prominent in mainstream American culture and media.

This emerging cultural phenomenon of UFO enthusiasm should be considered folklore, UFO believers produce their own mythologies, narratives, and traditions that are important in identifying membership within UFO and extraterrestrial related folk groups.

Studying UFO/extraterrestrial support networks as a folk group allows us to apply theories, methodologies, and frameworks from a variety of disciplinary fields.
