Because UFO experiencers are often marginalized among the general public as well as academics, there is a prominent reluctance to participate in studies or research involving UFO narratives, abductions, or sightings.

By studying UFO Support Groups as a folk group, and their associated folklore, we can hope to further lessen the stigmatization of UFO research in both an academic and social sense. To most UFO experiencers, the encounters they have are very real, and the goal of many social sciences (including folklore and anthropology) is to study the life experiences, beliefs, and values of stigmatized or marginalized groups.
